Maybe before having re-installed the application, etc. - *maybe* something like Belarc Advisor (which you are welcome to install, run and check the results of now) would have revealed the serial number of the installed application(s) - including CS3. The serial number is NOT stored on the CD - it is just the installation files. The installation files could be used with MANY different serial numbers and would never know the difference nor care. The serial number upkeep, I am afraid, was totally in your hands.
I have not heard of the 'known issue' that Microsoft Security Essentials would uninstall an application like Adobe CS3 and remove its serial number from the system completely. Even if I had - I would end up at the same point..
